PRESIDENT BUHARI ROMANCING SANCTIONS

Does Nigeria have an effective Government?

How is a rag tag organization of less than 5 years, and dubiously tagged a terrorist group, able to overcome that dangerous characterization and launch a diplomatic offensive to be able to convince foreign members of Congress and its diplomats right under the noses of serving ambassadors and attaches for different engagements, that Christians are being persecuted in Nigeria.

How is that terrorist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB, with a meagerly budget 85K monthly able to counter the billion-dollar budget of the Ministry of external affairs with board seats at various international organizations including the UN where a Nigerian serves as the deputy Secretary General.

Only two things could have gained IPOB access to all powerful foreign policy makers, one would be that IPOB is being used to undermine the federal government of Nigeria, but then do they need an excuse, or perhaps the true frightening reality, that they can rightfully undermine Nigeria because they are being fed the truth about the genocidal slaughter of Christian communities after years of subterfuge.

From Southern Kaduna to the Benue valley down to the Yoruba west and the Igbo east, the land is awash with blood spilt relentlessly by the Islamic hordes of the Fulani militia, an ethnic group that shares an affinity to President Buhari, a vocal Islamist.

The sad reality is that this administration can point to no universally accepted benchmark about its efforts to end the genocidal bloodshed or bring the perpetrators-or their sponsors to book, in fact the government led by a Muslim is dangerously dismissive and in a constant state of denial or obfuscation of the religious based genocide.

This glaring failure to address endemic insecurity and genocidal slaughters across the land since this administration and the recent revelation by the presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, of the diplomatic activities of IPOB is an ominous alarm about what Nigeria could potentially face in the future.

Back in 1997 despite all appeals and warnings the regime of Sani Abacha went ahead to hang Ken Saro Wiwa on trumped up charges that incurred the wrath of the international community that enacted economic and diplomatic sanctions against Nigeria that caused untold hardship and made Nigeria a pariah amongst Nations, a deadly position.

Currently through ineptitude, insensitivity and plain and glaring partisanship, the Buhari led administration is romancing inviting sanctions against Nigeria from the west and especially America that is hardening its positions against religious based genocides overseas with calls for different levels of escalating sanctions.

Besides the economic sanctions, the federal government of President Buhari seems oblivious to the fact that America could easily revoke its sale of arms to Nigeria and encourage its allies to do the same with devastating consequences for the war to contain Boko Harem in the North east.

As a matter of urgency, all Nigerians including the diplomatic Corp and NASS need to wake up from their insensitive feckless slumber and begin to pressure the administration of President Buhari to initiate strong action to pull Nigeria out of the sanctions trap immediately before Nigeria dips into deeper poverty in a cold and potentially harsh post Covid environment.
