USELESS DEGREES: CASE STUDY FOR HISTORY MAJORS

Nigeria appears to be drifting to a state where anyone can do any job after a glorified degree in any field is obtained as you have historians working in banks instead of teaching and researching etc. A friend of mine responded comically in the affirmative to my delight “Leave that thing. I can study Islamic Religious Knowledge and still head Central Bank.” But not all jobs require a generalists, some jobs require specialists trained in a particular field. In the future Nigeria will return to the point where only skilled and specifically credentialed applicants will be allowed to perform certain jobs.  For instance What is a history major doing in a bank instead of researching academia or a sociologist not counseling or in some social works project instead, when there are thousands of economics, finance and marketing majors more suitably qualified for a bank job.  When that day of professionalism arrives many holders of certain degrees, in this case history, will be in for the...

Mismanagement of Nigeria’s Resources - Military (Education) Spending

The topmost world ranked university in Nigeria today is the University of Ibadan ranked at a distant 1074 followed by UNN at 2181, OAU at 2224, Covenant University at 2245 and ABU at 2641 according to ranking web of universities website currently and a recent slide from the gate crashing of UI into the top 1000 in 2016. It was not always this way, Nigerian Universities especially of the first generation were previously world ranked and affiliated to Universities in London and attracted expatriate and foreign students across the globe especially from neighboring African countries like Ghana. That was until the military seized power in 1966 ushering in the next decades of a steady deterioration of funding and management of civilian institutions particularly the civilian education sector. It did not particularly help that as the country restructured over the years each successive administration felt compelled to establish new Universities both at the federal and state level along with col...

Who to Blame for Nigeria’s State of Insecurity

It is appalling to observe social media and see some of the most spiteful people who cannot even broker peace within their own families call serving Presidents all manner of names and insinuate all manner of conspiracies committed by these figure head leaders for all the insecurity and killings in the land. From examining the criminality trends, it is clear Nigerians are losing their morality on a daily basis as the drag the country from a civilized state to a Hobbesian state of nature where life is nasty, short and brutish after inheriting a peaceful country after the exit of former colonial masters, Britain.  Barely six years after Britain left, Nigeria descended into a bloody civil war after a section of the country, went on a state sanctioned reprisal killing spree and ethnic cleansing to avenge political murders committed by a few. The tragic events prior, during and after the war played havoc with individual moral codes and instituted moral laxity in the execution of state po...

The Ranching and Cow Colony Debate

Image
Nigeria is a confederation of nations amalgamated into Nigeria by former colonial master, Britain, without regard for cultural, historical, or linguistic harmony. It was a union that was tested six years after independence by a bloody civil war in which other confederating units banded together to restrain and stop the Igbo from succeeding from Nigeria for over 30 months.  Since then a United Nigeria supported by its confederating units have suppressed other uprisings from other confederating national units like the Ogoni and Boko Harem trying to break away from Nigeria. Nigeria inherited a regional parliamentary based system from the British which it has over the years tweaked to a presidential system of government with supreme authority vested at the center. No longer do regions or states control their mineral resources, all royalties and monies accrued from the sale of their mineral like oil are payable to the center and disbursed to the confederating units, previously regions, ...
